When to Rest, When to See a Doctor

The honest framework for deciding whether your foot pain needs ice and patience - or an appointment.

Most foot and ankle pain doesn’t need a doctor. Some absolutely does. Here is how I think about the decision.

You Can Probably Rest and Wait If

  • Pain is mild and improving day by day
  • You can bear weight comfortably
  • There is no significant swelling, deformity, or bruising
  • The injury was minor (stepped wrong, mild twist)
  • You have less than a few days of symptoms

Try ice 15 minutes a few times a day, supportive footwear, and modified activity. Reassess at 48–72 hours.

Come See Me If

  • You can’t bear weight without significant pain
  • Swelling is severe or worsening
  • There is obvious deformity or you heard a “pop”
  • Pain wakes you up at night
  • A wound or color change won’t go away
  • You have diabetes, neuropathy, or vascular disease - and you have any new foot symptom
  • A problem (heel pain, ball-of-foot pain, plantar pain) has been going for more than 2–3 weeks

The cost of seeing me when it turns out you didn’t need to is small. The cost of waiting too long on an ankle fracture, a stress injury, or a diabetic wound can be very large. When in doubt, call.
