Morton's Neuroma Excision

For Morton's neuromas that have failed conservative care, surgical excision provides definitive, durable relief.

When to Excise

Symptomatic Morton’s neuroma that has failed at least 3–6 months of focused conservative care - wide footwear, metatarsal pads, custom orthotics, and one or two well-placed perineural injections.

The Procedure

Through a small dorsal incision in the affected web space, the thickened common digital nerve is exposed and excised proximal to the area of perineural fibrosis. Dr. O’Carroll uses a technique that minimizes the rate of stump neuroma recurrence.

Recovery

Stiff postoperative shoe for 2–3 weeks, transition to regular footwear, return to most activity by 6–8 weeks. The vast majority of patients have complete or near-complete relief of the original symptoms. Some experience expected residual numbness in the affected web space.
