When Immobilization Helps
Fractures, severe sprains, tendon injuries, post-operative recovery, and offloading of plantar wounds. The goal is controlled rest while preserving the option of weight-bearing.
The Spectrum
- Walking boots - removable, adjustable, allow controlled weight-bearing
- Total contact casts - gold standard for offloading neuropathic plantar wounds
- Plaster or fiberglass casts - for fractures requiring strict immobilization
- CAM walkers and rocker-soled shoes - for transitional weight-bearing
What to Expect
Most patients tolerate immobilization well. Dr. O’Carroll specifies weight-bearing status, duration, and a clear plan to wean back to normal activity once healing is established.
