Fracture Fixation (ORIF)

Open reduction and internal fixation of displaced and articular foot and ankle fractures - restoring alignment to prevent post-traumatic arthritis.

When ORIF Is Necessary

Displaced fractures, fractures involving the joint surface, fractures with rotational deformity, and fractures at sites with high nonunion risk (Jones fracture, fifth metatarsal base, talus) generally require accurate reduction and stable fixation.

Hardware

Modern locking plates and screws designed for foot and ankle anatomy provide rigid fixation that allows earlier protected weight-bearing in many cases. Dr. O’Carroll selects fixation appropriate to the fracture pattern, bone quality, and patient goals.

Recovery

Varies by fracture but generally non-weight-bearing or protected weight-bearing in a cast or boot for 4–10 weeks, followed by progressive return to activity. Hardware removal is sometimes performed later if symptomatic.
