Board-Certified Podiatric Surgeon

About Dr. O'Carroll

Dedicated to the highest standard of foot and ankle care for patients across the Central Coast.

Conservative treatment when possible. Surgical treatment only when necessary.

Dr. Brian O'Carroll, DPM, DABFAS, FACFAS provides thoughtful, personalized foot and ankle care focused on helping patients move better, heal well, and return to the life they enjoy. He believes great care starts with listening, clear communication, and choosing the right treatment for the individual - not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Dr. O'Carroll emphasizes conservative treatment whenever possible, while offering advanced surgical expertise when necessary. His clinical interests include sports medicine injuries of the foot and ankle, diabetic wound care, and reconstructive foot procedures, including advanced bunion correction with Lapiplasty®.

Born and raised in Chicago, Dr. O'Carroll earned his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences from Western Michigan University, with minors in Chemistry and Physics, before receiving his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. He then completed a two-year surgical residency in trauma and reconstructive foot procedures at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, where he later remained on faculty.

In 2008, Dr. O'Carroll relocated to California's Central Coast with his wife, Meghan. He is on staff at French Hospital Medical Center, Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, Marian Regional Medical Center, and Coastal Surgical Institute.

Today, Dr. O'Carroll practices as the foot and ankle specialist at Five Cities Foot & Ankle, the long-standing Central Coast podiatry group serving Pismo Beach, Santa Maria, and the surrounding communities. The clinic offers a full range of podiatric care - from routine visits and conservative treatment to advanced surgical reconstruction - delivered with the same emphasis on listening, accurate diagnosis, and unhurried consultations that have come to define his practice.

Dr. O'Carroll is board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Philosophy of Care

Precise Diagnosis First

The most common reason foot problems don't get better is that they're being treated incorrectly - because the diagnosis was wrong, or incomplete, or never established. Every patient leaves their first visit with a clear diagnosis and an explanation that makes sense.

Non-Surgical When Possible

Surgery is not the default. The overwhelming majority of foot and ankle problems respond to appropriate non-surgical treatment - when it's the right treatment, given consistently. Dr. O'Carroll recommends surgery when it's clearly indicated, not because it's easier to prescribe.

Surgical Precision When Needed

When surgery is appropriate, the outcome depends on precision - in pre-operative planning, intraoperative technique, and post-operative management. Dr. O'Carroll trains continuously to stay at the forefront of foot and ankle surgery, including advanced procedures like Lapiplasty® 3D bunion correction - a procedure he was the first to perform in the state of California, and one he has now performed for years with great success.

Honest Communication

Patients deserve to understand their condition, the evidence for different treatment options, the realistic outcomes of each, and the honest tradeoffs involved in every decision. Consultations here are not rushed. Questions are welcome.
