What They Are
Plantar warts are benign skin growths caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). They appear on weight-bearing surfaces, often with a grainy core and pinpoint dark spots (thrombosed capillaries). Unlike calluses, plantar warts hurt with side-to-side pressure rather than direct downward pressure.
Why They’re Stubborn
The thick, weight-bearing skin of the sole is a poor environment for many topical treatments to penetrate. Warts can also persist or recur after partial treatment.
A Stepwise Approach
Dr. O’Carroll begins with debridement and a high-strength salicylic acid protocol, escalating to cryotherapy, in-office cantharidin, or - for resistant lesions - minor excisional procedures. Multiple visits are usually required. Patience and consistency get the job done.
