Patients ask me where to walk and hike. Here is a working list, organized by what each trail asks of your feet - not by length or scenic rating.
Easy on the Feet
Bob Jones Trail (Avila Beach to San Luis Obispo). Paved, mostly flat, beautiful. Excellent for patients recovering from foot or ankle surgery, for older adults rebuilding walking endurance, and for anyone with sensitive feet.
Pismo Beach Boardwalk and Pier. Flat, mixed surfaces, great for short outings.
Lake Lopez Recreation Area. A loop around the lake with mostly even paths, plenty of rest spots.
Moderate
Cerro San Luis (Madonna Mountain). Decent climb, mixed surfaces, good for patients ramping back up cardiovascular work without too much technical demand.
Avila Ridge Trail. Well-graded, oak shade, manageable elevation.
Demanding
Bishop Peak. Summit hike with rocky, uneven sections. Test your ankles before you commit. Excellent footwear required.
Valencia Peak (Montaña de Oro). Steep, exposed, rewarding. Save for after you’ve done some easier hikes first.
Practical Notes
- Bring more water than you think you need
- Wear shoes that match the terrain - trail shoes for rocky paths, supportive walking shoes for paved trails
- If you’ve had ankle issues, stick to wider, even paths until your stability is solid
- A custom orthotic in your hiking shoe is often the difference between comfort and a flare-up
