A Foundation of the Practice
Limb salvage is one of the most demanding areas of podiatric surgery, and one that Dr. O’Carroll has trained extensively in. The goal is always the same: preserve the most functional foot possible, for the longest possible time.
What Limb Salvage Looks Like
Most limb-threatening foot infections and chronic non-healing wounds can be managed with a coordinated combination of:
- Aggressive surgical debridement and drainage
- Targeted antibiotic therapy (often IV)
- Vascular optimization with vascular surgery partners
- Bioengineered skin substitutes and reconstructive coverage
- Selective partial-foot amputation (toe, ray, transmetatarsal) when needed
- Tendon balancing and bony procedures to eliminate recurrent pressure points
When Amputation Is the Right Answer
Sometimes a partial-foot or below-knee amputation provides better function and quality of life than a prolonged, ultimately failing limb salvage attempt. When that is the case, Dr. O’Carroll discusses it openly - and ensures the amputation is performed at the most functional level for prosthetic fitting, with comprehensive coordination of post-operative rehabilitation and prosthetic care.
Recovery & Long-Term Care
Limb salvage is rarely a single procedure - it is a long-term partnership. Dr. O’Carroll follows limb-salvage patients indefinitely, focused on preventing the next wound and preserving every foot that can be preserved.
