Most foot and ankle surgery is outpatient. You arrive in the morning and you go home in the afternoon. Here is the typical sequence.
Check-In
Plan to arrive 60–90 minutes before your scheduled procedure time. You’ll register, change into a surgical gown, and meet the pre-op nursing team.
Pre-Operative Visit
I will see you in the pre-op area. We’ll confirm the procedure, answer last questions, and mark the operative site together. Anesthesia (commonly a regional block plus light sedation, or general anesthesia depending on the case) will see you to discuss their plan.
The Procedure
The procedure itself takes the time it takes - often 45 minutes to a few hours depending on what’s being done. You will not remember it.
Recovery
You’ll wake up in the recovery area with the operative foot bandaged or in a boot, often with a regional block keeping it numb for several hours. The recovery nurses will monitor you, manage pain and nausea, and confirm you can drink, void, and walk safely (with assistance) before discharge.
Discharge
You’ll go home with written instructions for medication, activity, dressing care, and follow-up. Your driver takes you home. Plan to rest with the foot elevated for the rest of the day.
The whole experience is usually less dramatic than patients expect.
