When Standard Care Stalls
A wound that fails to reduce in size by 50% over four weeks of optimal care is unlikely to heal with continued conservative therapy alone. At that point, advanced biologic therapies are appropriate.
The Options
- Autologous skin grafts harvested from the patient - durable, definitive coverage for selected wounds.
- Cellular and acellular tissue substitutes - bioengineered matrices and grafts that provide a scaffold for the patient’s own tissue to grow into.
- Amniotic and placental derivatives - biologic dressings rich in growth factors.
Selection Matters
Different products perform best in different wound environments. Dr. O’Carroll selects the product based on wound depth, exposed structures, infection status, and the patient’s overall health.
