What Compression Does
Graduated compression - tighter at the ankle, lighter as it moves up the calf - counteracts the venous hypertension that drives swelling, skin changes, and venous ulceration. It is the single most important treatment for venous disease.
Forms of Compression
- Multi-layer compression bandaging for active venous wounds
- Compression stockings in graduated strength categories for long-term management
- Pneumatic compression devices for refractory edema or lymphedema
Fit Is Everything
Compression that is too light is ineffective; compression that is too heavy in a patient with arterial disease is dangerous. Dr. O’Carroll measures, prescribes, and fits compression after confirming adequate arterial inflow.
